convictions.
A New Way of Life serves as the lead convener of the Los Angeles chapter of All of Us or None, a national organizing initiative comprised of former prisoners and their families seeking to combat social, political, and legal barriers to reentry and the many forms of discrimination that people face as a result of having a felony conviction. As such, A New Way of Life provides leadership as a community advocate for the rights of prisoners, former prisoners, and their families. Click HERE to visit the All of Us or None webpage! Ban the Box! The Ban the Box Campaign is a grassroots policy initiative aimed at increasing employment opportunities for people with past criminal convictions, by restructuring hiring procedures to be more open and fair. In Los Angeles, a Ban the Box initiative was introduced to the City Council in February 2006 and is formally known as the “Fair Employment Resolution.” If adopted, the Resolution will remove question 22 on the City’s job application that asks “have you ever been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony?” Instead, for most City positions, once an offer of employment is made, the candidate will submit a supplemental conviction history form and will be fingerprinted after a job offer is accepted. Banning the Box will give people with convictions a more fair chance at public employment, by postponing any consideration of conviction history until after they’ve had the opportunity to show that they are qualified for the job.
