History:
A New Way of Life Reentry Project was founded in 1998 as a sober living home for women
coming home from prison to the Watts area of Los Angeles. In 2002, recognizing the need for women to be
reunited with their children, A New Way of Life opened a second home to house women with children. A New Way
of Life now operates a total of 4 sober living homes for formerly incarcerated women and children who would
otherwise be homeless, and offers a wide range of support services to help facilitate their successful
transition back to community life.
A New Way of Life Reentry Project is unique in that its Founder and Executive Director, Susan Burton, is
herself a former prisoner and recovering addicts who understands first hand the challenges that women face
leaving prison. After spending more than 20 years trapped in the criminal justice system, Susan gained freedom
and sobriety in 1997 and dedicated herself to helping other women to break cycles of incarceration,
homelessness, addiction and despair. Susan and the New Way of Life staff, Board, and graduates are role models
who provide compassion, direction, and hope to women who most need an opportunity to start a new life.
