A New Way of Life Reentry Project is well aware that the laws protecting people with conviction history are little known outside a small number of advocates and attorneys. Ignorance of these laws affects everyone, from job seekers to job developers and employers. We believe that widespread awareness of these laws will help improve the lives of people with conviction histories and the whole community.
To that end, we provide “Know Your Rights” trainings for job seekers with conviction histories at local job fairs and community meetings. We have also developed a brief brochure to explain some of the most important information affecting job seekers with conviction history.
We also provide regular training for job developers at local WorkSource offices on the rights of their clients and how to enforce them effectively. In addition, we regularly reach out to local employers to educate them about their liabilities under the existing laws when they make an employment decision regarding job applicants with conviction history.
Finally, we provide a regular training for both community members and law students at UCLA School of Law who volunteer at our monthly Reentry Legal Clinic, and we made a portion of that training available online.
