Susan Burton is a former prisoner who was trapped in the criminal justice system for over a decade before finding freedom and sobriety in 1997. Through the founding of a non-profit called A New Way of Life Reentry Project (ANWOL), she has since made it her life’s mission to help others adversely affected by incarceration. For her efforts, she was named a CNN Top Ten Hero for 2010. She was also awarded the prestigious Citizen Activist Award from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
To date, Susan’s work has transformed hundreds of lives through the effective provision of community-based reentry services for women. Through an innovative design, ANWOL provides reentry services for less than 1/3 of the cost of incarceration. The organization is reversing the cycle of recidivism and repairing families; 7 out of every 10 women served are able to successfully reenter our communities.
Susan is also dedicated to facilitating a local/national grassroots community organizing effort that can attain enough political power to reverse the discriminatory policies and practices affecting former prisoners. Susan Burton continually displays empathy, courage, commitment and leadership on behalf of a socially disenfranchised group; formerly incarcerated individuals.
